Welcome to my private and non-commercial Vintage Star Drums Web Site! This web site is dedicated to vintage Star drums, the predecessor of the worldwide known and well- reputated drum company, TAMA.

I intended to make it look like a virtual vintage drum museum, containing a collection of photos of old Star drum kits and other Star-related information as well.

There’s a bunch of photos on each drop-down menu point: Please kindly be patient when it’s uploading! A short note to viewers with a mobile phore: The entire web site is optimized for use with a PC (desktop mode), only. Viewing from a mobile phone – or laptop (tablet) – might neither show the menu nor other features on this web site in the correct form.

A Brief History Star was founded in 1962 by the Japanese company Tama Seisakusyo (later called Hoshino Gakki) and first started manufacturing drums under the Star brand name in 1965. In 1974 the company changed it’s name from STAR to TAMA – so the documentation of this web site will stop exactly there: It’s all about Vintage Star Drums, only!

Star Drums It is my deep desire to keep the roots of these fantastic drums up from being forgotten. In parallel, the community of vintage drums lovers is constantly growing worldwide.

Especially over the last years the verve for vintage drums, their sound and their flair has found more and more fans. And I know from several drum forums, that amongst those there’s a group of people, who have a soft spot for Star drums. This web site is dedicated to them.

Show me *** YOUR *** Star drum kit/s, please! This web site is some kind of ‘interactive’ and shall stay vivid for a long time. So if you proudly own a Star drum kit (or any other set with a name mentioned on this web site at OTHER BRANDS & BADGES), you may send me pictures of it and I’ll be more than happy to present it here, too!

Well, but I have two requests in this regard: Please kindly reduce the pic to the drums – and don’t add any person or even a pet to the drum kit: This web site shall maintain it’s special focus to Star drums.

Secondly, if you have a modified (in terms of rewrapping) drum kit, it’s ok for me – but, please, kindly don’t send me any photos of furtheron converted drum kits (as e.g. with substituted lugs, black tom hoops or similar). I’d like to keep the charm of the drums on this web site as original as possible.

Today we know that Star also used to be sold under a number of other names since approx. 1965. Due to the characteristic details of the drums this can be considered to be true. Namely the style of the lugs but, tom brackets, shell constructions and the design of the badges are indicators for a drum kit, telling us that it was made by Star (or not). Besides Bollero and DrumMate, the following brands of that time are believed to be made by Star as well (I don’t claim that this list is already complete!): Apollo (two versions) – Artist Ltd. – Barclay – BenTone – Boston – Carlton – Champion – Conqueror – DrumCraft – Ibanez – Ideal – Jason – King’s Stone – Lido Supreme (two versions) – Lotus – Lucky Star – Lyra (three versions) – Magnum – Majestic – Mayfair – Mitchel – Ralston – Revelle – Saturn – Stewart – SupreMacy – Tempo – Tulio – U.S.Mercury – Weltron – Werco. Typical is the wording ‘World’s Supreme Quality’ or ‘World’s Finest Quality’ on almost all badges from that time. And nearly all of these brands appeared in the USA only.
